Possibly the most brilliant post war British designer, over a sadly short career. Ernest Race approached materials and processes with foresight of form and intellectual vigour. His progressive BA furniture range easily matched the industrialised designs of his European contemporaries, such as Prouve. Using veneered, cellular Bakelite sheet material that was wrapped in a heated aluminium edge, the tables, shelving and cabinets were astutely modern and suited to wartime timber shortages. The BA chair also used resmelted aluminium and was rightfully acknowledged internationally.
